I knew the science behind it, but I didn’t want to believe that it’s true. I mean, we’ve all wondered it before. Does driving slower save gas? But I think we all know the truth. Here is the result of my one-week experiment:
Driving slower saves you gas.
Three days per week, I gather my lunch cooler, sweater, music, and coffee mug and drive the 120 round trip commute into work.
To make it less painful (and quicker), I usually cruise at a comfortable 77-80MPH up the highway.
This past week (barring standstill traffic, of course), I maintained 70MPH or lower. And increased my mileage per gallon by at least five miles per gallon (started at about 26MPG and ended at 31MPG). I think if I don’t use the AC on the way home I can get it even higher!
Yep. Sorry. I felt super un-cool as all the reckless DC drivers blasted past me. But then I looked at my tank and knew I would win in the end.
