Part of Paleo, growing up, and reading things on the internet, is starting to realize that the products you slather on your skin make it into your blood stream, your stomach, and your immune system.
It only gets worse from here, folks.
Introducing the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. This database collects data on major cosmetic products and compiles them to rate the relative “safety” of a given product. You can use to find out how good (or bad!) your favorite products are. Spoiler alert: your favorite products might be poisoning you.
For my first experiment, I took on my go-to hair cream, Rusk Wired hair creme.
Rusk Wired was a lifesaver when I found it. It gave me great hair 8/10 days I used it. But EWG gave it a game-changing red rating of 7 with several ingredients known to mess with your hormones, immune system, and organ system.
I swapped it out within days for a Whole Foods find: Andalou Naturals Styling Cream. This one isn’t listed on EWG, but two similar products (a hair gel and a hair serum) both have green ratings of 2, so I am pleased for now.
The best news of all is twofold: it has given me 10/10 good hair days, including those hair days where you’re kind of angry about taking a shower because your hair looks so good that it feels like a waste, and it’s $5.00 cheaper than what I usually paid for Rusk. And oh yeah, it smells like orange creme! Well done, Andalou!
Have you made any health-swaps for products that have fewer chemicals?
