Dressing nicely in plus size clothing feels impossible. And I thought it was impossible for like 25 years. But when you finally get over it and stop waiting for “that day when you’ll cut out the nonsense and lose 30 lbs,” you can really make some progress.
Whether you lose weight in the future or not, there’s no reason to look like crap right now. Here’s how to turn this ship around in three tried and true steps I took myself:
1. Spend time and money on bras
Yes, it stinks, and yes it’s awkward, but schedule an hour, leave some room on your credit card, and head to Her Room to take their awkward quiz . Order 3-4 bras to try out, then buy 3-4 of the one that fits.
I guarantee it will change your life. The wrong size, weepy-weak bras make you look and feel dowdy and gross. The right one turns you into a pin-up and makes everything you already own flatter you all over again.
2. Say Hello to cowl necks
In the right color, I swear there’s a plus size cowl neck in a comfortable, elegant fabric for everyone. Take a look at these beauties, try one in a 2X or 3X, and get ready to feel like dressing up. Perhaps not in this exact brand, I own four. They work with jeans, a suit, and a skirt, and they always flatter a larger bust.
3. Pants suck, try a pencil skirt
Another common problem for plus size girls is finding pants that fit at all, then dealing with the length, and then still not liking how they sit around the waist. Forget it.
Get two pairs of Jockey skimmies (thin undershorts), and skirts will suddenly seem like glorious alternatives again. Your next step is a classy pencil skirt from Igigi. You’ll feel amazing, I promise.
